Hi,
Burning pain can sometimes be nerve related. Nerve related pain is called neuralgia. It can be due to abnormal function of the nerves, this is called neuropathy. Abnormal nerve function (neuropathy) can cause neuralgia (nerve related pain). It can be temporary or permanent.
The causes include:
(1)
vitamin b12 or folate deficiency
(2) thyroid disease
(3) trauma- this does not have to be direct trauma but may be due to
arthritis for example in a joint affecting a nerve in the area
(4) side effect of medication
(5) abnormal levels of vitamin b6 (either high or low levels can cause this problem)
(6) diabetes
(7) liver or kidney disease
(8) exposure to toxins
For the time being, you can try over the counter pain killers such as Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Voltaren. If there is no improvement then you may need additional medication such as medication directed towards the nerves, that is Lyrica,
Amitriptyline,
Nortriptyline, Tegretol,
Gabapentin.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
