Suggest Treatment For Severe Stress And Anxiety

I ve been having trouble swallowing. Sometimes it takes me a couple of swallows to feel like water is getting down, and it s hard to swallow solid foods. I feel like I m going to choke on it. Surprisingly though, softer more liquid foods like apple sauce seem to get down easier. II have an anxiety disorder, I m in my 20s, and I ve been under a lot of stress lately. I just don t know what this could be or what I can do about it

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

Before attributing the issue to anxiety it should be made sure there aren't other possible causes. For that I would suggest a throat exam by an ENT specialist.

At times a gastroenterologist consult and barium swallow imaging to view the peristaltic of the airways mediating food swallowing may be considered.

If all results normal then anxiety may be addressed as a possible cause. For that psychotherapy sessions and when not enough treatment with antianxiety medication (antidepressants are the preferred choice) is necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
