Suggest Treatment For Severe Swelling And Pain In Knee Post Injury

My 17 year old son was at soccer practice yesterday and got run into as he was turning. The outside of his right knee just below and outside of the knee cap area was injured. IS that considered a ligament injury? It has a small amount of swelling but he cannot place full weight on it (limping mostly). It feels loose and can spontaneously buckle. I tried to get him to ice it and succeeded a little but. He s taking ibuprophen and elevating it along with wrapping it with an ace. How long do we wait before taking him to a doctor?
