Suggest Treatment For Severe Swelling In The Cheeks

my adult son says his cheeks are swollen and thinks the back of his jaw and in front of his ear is also swollen. Last year he had extreme swelling in his chin and suddenly had an opening that huge amounts of puss came out. Might this cheek swelling be the same thing? He lives in Tucson so maybe he got a bug bite?
He says there is not much pain in his cheeks but they are very swollen. He's worried it will turn bad like his problem last year.

Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the symptoms of swelling on both cheeks with swelling also present in front of ear seems to be due to infection in the Salivary Glands leading to Mumps Parotitis..

Mumps also known as "Epidemic Parotitis" is a VIRAL infection and it can affect either one side or both sides Parotid glands which are major salivary glands leading to the above explained symptoms..

It is very much probable from your explanation that he might have mumps..
You should get his investigations like x ray, salivary amylase and blood tests done and then treatment can be given..

In case if Mumps is confirmed then is no exact treatment for mumps and only symptomatic relief can be provided..

For pain you can take Acetaminophen or tylenol for relief..
Doing cold compresses can be relieving..
Take plenty of fluids which can include water,fruit juices,soups etc..
Take a soft and nutritious diet..
Take sufficient rest..

In case if the symptoms persist for more than 10 days without any relief you should consult a physician..

Although after occurrence of mumps once the person becomes immune for lifetime and and relapse can be with very mild symptoms..
