I am being treated for a sinus infection accompanied with a bad dry cough. Along with a penicillin shot and an antibiotic, I have been put on steroids for 9 days and prescribed both Benzonatate and Iophen. My question is can I take both the Benzonatate and Iophen together? I am an active 72 year old otherwise healthy male. Since teenage years these infections and especially the urge to cough and lingering cough have been my achilles heal.
Hi. Thanks for your query and an elucidate history. Noted your history of suffering from sinus infection and bad dry cough. It is difficult to believe that you have dry cough as with sinusitis the cough is always productive. You need either of Benzonatate or Iophen. It is better to avoid Iophen as it contains codeine that can cause constipation in old age and yours is 72 years.
I would advise the following : Get investigated for the blood and urine, X-ray of the chest and CT scan of the sinuses to confirm whether you really have sinusitis or just an irritating allergic cough. If sinusitis really present, it is better to concentrate on this. Treating this may improve your symptoms for ever. I hope this answers your query.
