Hello thanks for asking from HCM

You son is 17 years old and is one Fluoxetine 20 MG per day for depressive symptoms and social anxiety disorder. He has shown improvement in depression but still have features of social phobia. Now he has been advised to take Venlafaxine 75 mg in addition to Fluoxetine. Venlafaxine is a SNRI drug and it can help in social anxiety. It is safe to use and free of serious side effects. You can think of giving this drug to him. But other option is to increase the dose of fluoxetine. He is on 20 mg per day which as per my opinion is low dose considering his symptoms. Also as per guidelines if he has symptoms even with drug first option should be to increase the dose. Increasing the doses to 40-60 mg will help to control his anxiety. Apart from that in severe anxiety provoking social situations medicines like Propranolol can help in good recovery. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, hope this helps you.

Hi.

I had gone through your query.

Velnafaxine is anti depressant but has good role in treatment of anxiety disorder like social phobia etc.

Prodep contains fluoxetine and it has also good role in phobia.

Psychotherapy like behavior therapy is the choice to treat phobia.
Only medicines can not help much.
Exposure to social situations and learn the response and try to modify behavior is the main principal for this psychotherapy.

Other therapy like cognitive behavior therapy, flooding and systemic desensitization are also helpful.

Consult and discuss about all to your treating psychiatrist.

I Hope i have answered your query.

Thank you.
