Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Hoarseness And Loss Of Appetite

My husband has one symptom that has persisted for more than a year and the doctors have run tests but are unable to find an answer that will him relief. He continues to open his nose with a Q-tip so he can breathe, has excess drainage, constantly clearing his throat and spitting up yellow/green mucous with blood. He can not sleep in a laying position, he must always keep his head propped or sit in a chair to sleep. After several years (yes, years), he now is getting swelling in the glands below the ears, sore throats, hoarseness, and loss of appetite. Also I must let you know he had Type 2 diabetes that has been hard to control. I think the reason for this is he is so drained from not being able to breathe correctly. Please give us some advice.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The most striking possibility here sounds to be hypertrophied turbinates or adenoids most likely obstructing the airway at pharyngeal levels. If the indirect laryngoscopy has been performed till now, let me know the results of the same for complete reference and further guidelines ahead. Till that time, maintain his posture in semi reclining or 45 degree head up so that better control can be obtained over the breathing and underlying secretions. Strict diabetes control is also very essential for the issue to prevent secondary bacterial infection via compromised immunity status.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
