General & Family Physician, Dr. Sandhya's Response
Hello! That sounds pretty much uncomfortable. Since the doctor had informed that ge would call back if he sees anything but you did not receive a call, I assume that there was no abnormality found on the x-rays. Sometimes, blunt soft tissue injuries may present with rib pain along with other symptoms like swelling, redness and localized inflammation. Other causes include inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the breast bone (sternum). This is known as costochondritis. OTC medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, applying ice packs and warm compress alternately, taking a hot shower, avoiding strenuous activitues and lifting heavy weights might be helpful. Try to rest that side of the arm as much as possible to rest the rib as well. Wear loose cotton clothes. If none of this seems to help, an MRI scan of the chest may be helpful to localize any soft tissue injuries. Hope this helps! Take care.
