Suggest Treatment For Sprained And Swollen Knee

I sprained (I think) my knee about 6 weeks ago skiing. It has improved but is still swollen at the side and I can't fully bend it to a squat without feeling some discomfort. Starting to worry that I have torn a ligament and it won't heal without treatment. I'm on my feet most of the day at work and I suspect that isn't helping the healing process. Before the injury I was very active, running 30-40 miles per week and swimming. Been an athlete competing at high levels in the past and I'm very familiar with sports injuries but have never damaged my knee before. I don't have very good health insurance and I'm worried about the cost of starting to go to doctors/specialists/physio to treat this injury.
