Suggest Treatment For Stiff Neck, Dizziness And Lack Of Appetite

Hi, My eight year old daughter was diagnosed at Ramstein in Germany (at 8 months) with Chiari 1 Malformation. At 2, a pediatric specialist at Children s in Omaha looked at the MRI and said, You have nothing to worry about. She is prone to ear infections and have had a number of appointments, having tubes once. Every time she gets one, she gets a fever, a headache and gets dizzy. Since yesterday, she has been complaining of a headache, dizziness, had a low-grade fever (100.7) and now a new symptom - her neck is stiff and it hurts. She also slept on the sofa for 2.5 hours.... she hasn t napped since she was 2.5. That worries me for a number of reasons - she has never had a stiff neck, is listless and says when she moves too much she is dizzy, and has had little to no appetite for two days. Being the overprotective mom, I looked up both meningitis and Chiari 1 - and she fits symptoms of both. My husband thinks I m crazy, but I feel I should take her to the hospital in the morning if she still has the symptoms....?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, you should take her to the hospital. As these symptoms like fever, stiff neck, headache, dizziness are due to meningitis only. Intravenous antibiotics like penicillin/Cephalosporin will help her.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
