Suggest Treatment For Stiffness In Joints And Blurred Vision While On Medications For Asthma

2 1/2 years ago, I was hospitalized for a severe asthma attack..I was receiving 40mg intravenous prednisone every 6 hours... They released me 2 days later with a 4 mg dose pack and 23 hours later, I was rushed back to the ER in critical condition.... They ended up giving me 60mg of pred every 6 hours for the next 5 days... Since that visit to the hospital, I have basically been on steroids about every 6 wks for 14 days at a time... After this past spring when I was admitted into the hospital again, I saw a pulmonologist a week after being released... I was still taking 60mgs of prednisone a day orally and so he had me taper down the dose by 5mg every 3days until I was done with it...He also put me on Breo 200mcg/25mcg; Incruse 62.5mcg; and 400mg of theophylline a day.... This combination worked wonders for my asthma..... For the first time in 30 years, I could go an entire day without having to use my rescue inhaler... For that matter, I went 3 whole months with only having to use it twice..... It seemed that I had finally gotten everything under control... But I noticed a couple of days after I started this new regiment that I was having stiffness in my hips after sitting for long periods of time and from there it moved to my hands, and then my feet, knees, and neck.... I first thought it was bone pain so I made sure not to miss taking my calcium supplement but then I noticed that my finger joints were swollen and it only hurt in my hands where the swelling was..... I was also experiencing blurred vision and chest pain that I contributed to all the prednisone but when I consulted my doctor, he recommended that I stop taking the incruse and breo immediately.... and so I figured those meds were causing the joint pain as well but I have been off of them for a month now and the pain just seems to be escalating... I work in catering so I am constantly on my feet and picking up heavy things ....I don t have another appointment to see my Dr. for another month so I was wondering if you could help shed some light on what could possibly be wrong with me.... If nothing else so that I can suggest it to my dr. to help speed up a diagnosis.... Thanks Carrie Westfall

Hi,

Hard to say in your particular case. The hands and the hips seem to have occurred together. It is possible you developed some arthritis while ON the prednisone and just wouldn't notice it until it was completed.

BUT, I cannot say in your particular case without an exam... and maybe not even then, BUT, prednisone is well-known to cause a severe degeneration of the hip called AVASCULAR NECROSIS where the hip bones just die off. It's quite as bad as that sounds and the symptoms start out quite subtle. You might want your doctors to consider it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
