Suggest Treatment For Sudden Hard Cough And Burning In Temple Area

Last Thursday I had a sudden, hard cough occur and immediately afterwards a very sharp, slightly burning rush and pop went up the left side of my neck into my temple area. To date, the pain has not subsided even after taking ibuprofen each day as well as Tramadol once yesterday. The radius of the area has increased from about a dime size into a bit larger than a half dollar and seems to be increasing in tenderness. I have a history of migraines and this is nothing like a regular headache. Should I be concerned? I work at a hospital and the CT Tech stated I should consider a CT Head w/wo contrast if it worsens or doesn t ease up as did another coworker. Please advise. I have also had some dizziness in the last couple days and am really sleepy feeling.

Hi.

Noted your history of sudden hard cough following which developed pain in head at temporal area, from neck, Ibuprofen and Tramadol did not help, working in a Hospital hence the CT Technician suggested CT scan of head, also have some dizziness, and feeling sleepy.
The commonest cause I can think about are one of the following:
The sudden movement that occur during violent coughing can cause the cervical spondilitis changes to worsen and become symptomatic like you have. Or the slipped disc problem worsens.
Local causes like trapped nerve.
Intra-cranial tumor or so, when the pain is pointed.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get an MRI of the cervical spine and CT scan of brain.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed consult an appropriate Specialist for further evaluation and proper management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
