Suggest Treatment For Sugar Level Reduction Post Thyroid Gland Removal

I have diabetes and had my thyroid cut out due to cancer. prior to the surgery my blood sugar was around 140 if i overindulged in a meal and if I super indulged like a buffet it might go up to 189 my blood sugar never went over 200. since I had my thyroid cut out my blood sugar is now around 283 when I wake up and one day even went up to 397 after breakfast my question is should I go on some diabetes medicine or insulin my doctor wanted me to try exercise because prior to the thyroid surgery exercise and diet always lowered by suger, but it does not appear to help now.

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I can understand your concern.
If the values of blood sugar before the intervention were suggestive for prediabetes, now the values are too high and i can say that it is Diabetes.
The surgical interventions are considered as a ''stress'' for organism and it reacts by producing high adrenaline and other hormones that raise the blood sugars.
It may be a temporarily raise in blood sugar, but it must be treated for as long as it is high.
A HBA1c level would be of help in order to decide if you will be treated with tablets or insuline.
You will need also to check the renal and liver function prior to start the treatment.
Wish you good health and feel free to ask if you will have further queries in the future.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta Guni
