I got sunburn on holiday last week (despite using factor 50 suncream every 20 minutes and staying mostly in the shade) It peeled a bit on my chest - have been using calamine cream and aloe vera moisturiser to keep it moist. Then it peeled a bit and then stung really badly overnight and now the peeled area has scabbed across and is very tight and sore - do I need anything more than the Aloe Vera cream or is this healing OK?
Acute sunburn can be very painful and discomforting.
If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a short course of an oral steroids. Oral steroids are rapidly acting and immediately bring down the sweeling and discomfort.
In addition to that you could use topical moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate cream, twice daily for a week.
An OTC pain killer/anti-inflammatory e.g ibuprofen or aspirin can be taken twice or thrice daily to relieve the pain and discomfort.
Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen, throughout the day.
