Hi I fell down the stairs and twisted my right foot inwards. I have previous ligament, and Achilles tear. My foot has been throbbing since this morning, I ve already ice packed it, I can t put pressure on it, and it has swelled on the latter side of my foot. I m wondering whether its just swollen. Do you think I need medical assistants?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have history of ligament and Achilles tear, presently you had twisted your foot inwards and are experiencing swelling and pain post ankle injury. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an Orthopedics. Get X-ray, MRI / CT done to detect any bone fracture or tendon, ligament tear.

You will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, give rest to the affected feet, do not put your weight on it. Get a crepe bandage done (not tight) to ease discomfort. Take NSAIDS, Combiflam or naproxen, one stat when needed to get rid of pain. Swelling is a sign of inflammation and may also be indicative of bone fracture or tendon / ligament tear. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
