Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father -in-law visited us in Nebraska a month ago. While he was here he developed harsh pain and swelling in his hands and wrists. He took some Celebrex which seemed to help with swelling, but still had some soreness in his wrists. As they traveled back to Arizona, symptoms reappeared and over the next couple of weeks, got progressively worse, ie swelling and pain moved up his arms. Has been checked for blood clots and also tested for RA? He is 78 years old and a smoker. Any ideas?
Persistent or recurrent swelling in joints of wrist with extension to upper arm may be related to auto immune related disorder such as rheumatoid or osteoarthritis. Clinical perspective is important to look for the involvement of first metacarpophalangeal joint, which is missing in rheumatoid arthritis.
However, his X-ray or MRI findings may be of paramount importance to evaluate the same in greater details. Following measures will help him for better recovery: - Analgesic spray or ointment containing Diclofenac, Capsaicin, Menthol - Anti-inflammatory medications as Celecoxib, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac etc - Arm support with sling - Local application of heating pad or ice - Avoidance of weight bearing, computer work if involved
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
