Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Pain In Foot After Injury

This afternoon, my ankle seemed to give out and I fell down the last step of my stairs. Instantly my foot began to hurt and swell, and now there is a bluish bruise and a lot of swelling over my cuboid bone in my left foot. I can barely walk because it hurts to move my foot and put weight on it. Should I see a doctor now or see if it goes away in a few days?

Hello,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

The bluish bruise in your foot suggests for a hematoma. Pain is because of the ankle edema that compresses the nerves.

The very first thing to do when having trauma of any type (including falling or stepping your feet) is to apply cold compresses locally. This will not let your legs and feet get swollen.

If you fell this afternoon, I advise to apply cold compresses for the next 48 hours. At night, you put a mixture of blended onion with salt. Keep your leg raised to reduce edema. Ibuprofen or paracetamol can be used for the pain.

After 48 hours from the fall, if still swollen, keep applying mixture of blended onion with coarse salt. If it will remain bruised, heparin cream can be used to disperse the clotted blood.

If still pain or no improvement, you may need to do an x-ray of your foot to evaluate the changes in the bones and other structures of ankle joints.

I wish you fast recovery.
