Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Purple Discoloration In Knee After Injury

HI Doc, I was playing pick up basketball on the court. My opponents knee had come in contact with the lower part of my leg, located right below my calf muscle. Now that area is swollen and purple in color. The injury happened Monday, and today is Wednesday. Do you know what my diagnoses is and should I be concerned?

Hi,

Based on your description, you may have a knee contusion (bruise) from the impact. The swelling and purple discoloration are common signs of a bruise. It is important to rest and elevate your leg, apply ice for 15-20 minutes every few hours, and take over-the-counter pain medication as needed for pain relief.

You should also consider seeing a doctor, especially if the swelling and discoloration worsen or if you experience difficulty bearing weight on your leg. The doctor may recommend imaging tests, such as an X-ray or MRI, to rule out any fractures or other injuries.

In addition to rest and pain management, treatment for a knee contusion may also include compression with a bandage or brace and physical therapy exercises to promote healing and restore range of motion. Overall, it is important to take proper care of your injury to avoid any further complications and ensure a speedy recovery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
