Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Tightness In Leg Muscles After A Running Session

Hi, I m a 47 years old female. I m a very active person, woking out regullarly. In February after my running session my knees started to hurt. They were swallen and the muscles felt tight. I was diagnosed with tendonitis, given 800mg Ibuprohen. Took it for ten days, there was no change. X-Ray showed nothing. Went back to see the dr. I was given Naproxen 500mg. It didn t help at all with the inflamation or the pain. No change, the muscles are very tight around my knees specially my hamstrings. Stretching will ease the pain little bit. Right now I reached the point where I have no enough strength in my knees to stand up from deep squatting position without holding onto support. will I ever gain the strength in my legs? Did I just lose muscle strenght or have I knee issue and not tendonitis. Thanks for your answer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from pain, swelling, tightness in the legs (hamstring muscles). You were diagnosed with tendonitis. You are suggested to get connected to Physical therapist. He will guide you in a variety of stretches, exercises according to your individual needs. The muscles get tight due to injury to the hamstrings, lack of flexibility causes the muscles not be able to be able to perform certain activities.

Get massage therapy done, it will relieve your pain and discomfort. It will help to reduce stress as well. When the muscles heal, you will be able to move your knees and do other daily activities. If obese loose weight. Returning to strenuous activities before your hamstring muscles are completely healed might cause an injury recurrence. Give it time to heal.

Avoid strenuous activities, use a cane to avoid putting your full weight on your injured leg. Apply ice packs to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Compression bandage may help. Take acetaminophen (Tylenol), once when required to reduce pain and inflammation. Get clinically examined by a GP or Surgeon. Get X-ray, CT, MRI done. Severe muscle tears also can be repaired by surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
