General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us on HCM.

From the symptoms you have suggested it is most likely that your mother is suffering from what is commonly known as congestive heart failure. This is a condition associated with water pooling in the body which may show up as swelling of the feet, and in people who have a slightly severe form, the fluid may build up in the lungs leading to difficulty in breathing. This accumulation increases when the person lies down due to gravity. That is why there is trouble sleeping.

The water pill or "diuretic" will help reduce the fluid build up and help her heart to pump blood more normally.
