Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Knee

I am 62. 6 0 200 Lbs. At age 59 (235 lbs) I attempted the 10 minute trainer program. In one segment the instructor used a pigeon pose, which I knew nothing about but tried to do anyway, went to far and felt a little pop in my knee. Over the next few days it began to hurt and swell. I could barely walk on it. I treated it with ice packs and aleve. After 3 months I did go to an orthopedist, xray showed no broken bones. i am able now to use all leg machines at the Gym, and 30 minutes on the elliptical machine makes it feel wonderful. However there is still a little pain pushing a lawn mower up hill, walking uphill, or walking fast, twisting my leg, like as to try to dance, hurts. Walking normally I have a slight limp under full weight because I still feel the pain and it feels unstable like my leg below the knee might twist or bend backwards (that may be all in my head). Will this always be that way, or If I continue to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee will it eventually go away?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

In your case, there are few possible causes and if there was no injury then some other chronic disorder may be present. Without more information, it is not enough to determine the diagnosis.

It could be a hematoma (bleeding in the tissues) or a swollen knee joint capsule.

If it's in the back of the knee then it could be a Baker's cyst. Clinical examination (and perhaps fluid aspiration if there's any) would help to determine the diagnosis. Either an orthopedics specialist or your primary care physician can do that.

Until then you can try to apply ice packs (not directly on the skin - wrap them with a towel) and perhaps use some painkillers starting with paracetamol (acetaminophen) and advancing to NSAID if paracetamol is not enough and there's no contraindication for NSAID.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
