Suggest Treatment For Swelling On The Ankles

I am 66, relatively active & my doc would like me to lose 40lbs. My lower legs have a red mottled shiney look & my ankles are quite swollen...this has never happened before. I can get the swelling down w/ elevating my feet after about an hour in the pool, or sleeping would be unpleasant.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello. There are multiple reasons why there might be leg edema or swelling. In your case it might be due to overweight and thus causing strain on the lymphatics of legs. Other possible factor is due to Anti hypertensive medications if you are on. Tab Amlodipine particularly causes leg edema. Also other factors which needs to be ruled out is kidney disease for which kidney function tests have to be done. If there is dyspnea or breathlessness on exercising even cardiac cause have to be ruled out. In any case consult your physician and get tested for all these. All the best
