Hello doctor , My question today: my father who is 75 yrs old had chikungunya 8 months ago. He experiences lower extremity swelling constantly. His labs are remarkable. He has no significant medical problems except stenosis of the spine. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for using HCM, I understand your concern and will try to give you my medical advice, I think your father is experiencing some complications although the chikungunya mostly improve in 7-10 days, the virus remains weeks, months or even years in those person with a weak immunological system( your father is 75 years old) joint pain, joint swelling and muscle pain are the commons symptoms although the disease not often result in death the symptoms can be severe and disabling, at this moment just try to reduce the symptoms avoid long standing periods, not wear tight socks and elevate his legs. I hope that my advice has been helpful, take care
