Suggest Treatment For Swelling On The Tongue And Lips

I have periodic swelling of my tongue and lips for absolutely no known or tested reason. When it occurs (almost always between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.) I take two or three prednisone tabs and an Allegra tablet. This always reduces the swelling but usually takes three hours or so to become effective. Are the medicines and doses I take appropriate. I far prefer to take them than go to a $3,000 ER.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that periodic swelling of the tongue and lips seems to be most probably due to some unknown allergen causing angioedema of the lips and tongue..
It can be any food or medication, bug bite, poison ivy etc..
I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get allergic tests like Patch test, RAST test, food challenge test etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
The tests will help in ruling out the exact cause of the allergen and once you know the cause of the allergic reaction you can avid exposure to it to prevent allergy attack..
He can be advised to take anti allergics like benadryl , levocetrizine, Allegra etc..
Oral and injectable steroids can be advised..
As it is recurring condition you can also be instilled an Immunotherapy that will help in reducing the severity and frequency of allergic attack..
Once the allergen is ruled out avoiding exposure to it can prevent the allergy symptoms..

Hope this information helps..

Regards..
