Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Bruised Finger

I jammed my finger tonight by a softball. My finger immediately started bruising and swelling up. It s not terrible, but it s noticable that my finger is bigger than the others. It s very tender. I heard that you relieve the pressure by poking your nail with a hot needle? But, is there any other option besides that? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.
A subungual hematoma--blood under the nail--can be treated by making a small hole in the nail with a heated paper clip that has been straightened, but in your case there could be a fracture involved so it would be best to have a doctor look at it and see if x-rays as warranted
