Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Discolored Nails Post Injury

I slammed my thumb in a car door yesterday. No lacerations. I immediately put my thumb in ice water for about an hour or so, off and on. Immediately the thumb and nail became black and blue and swollen. It doesn t hurt that much but it is very tender and throbs all the time. I am a male, age 70 in good health. Any reason I should be concerned or see a doctor at this point?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are having subungual hematoma which means bleeding under the nail. Most of the time, if the bleeding is minor and not much pain no treatment is needed.
In your case, because of the severe pain, probably the bleeding is more severe and causing pressure locally. The doctor may numb your fingers and make a hole in the nails to drain the bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
