Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Nose?

My sister has the appearance of swelling at the upper bridge of her nose. It s in between her eyes, but is not centralized. It s more towards one eye than the other. It first appeared a few months ago. She refuses to contact a doctor because she is worried. What could it be? I want to give her some helpful information so she will be encouraged to see her doctor.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi. Thank you for writing to HCM.

It sounds like it may be an infection of the tear gland duct on the affected side. This is called as dacryocystitis and can be confirmed if you can see a punctum on the swelling or the oozing of any pus.

The other causes of swelling over the bridge of the nose may be secondary to injury or fracture due to a blow on the nose. It may also be due to some benign growth lesions which are usually more in the midline.

I would definitely recommend an ENT consultation just to be sure due to the proximity to the eye and its propensity to spread. An x ray or CT scan may also be necessary if the examination of the nose and tear gland duct is normal. If it is dacryocystitis then antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications will be necessary.

I would encourage your friend to see a doctor. Do let her know that some of these conditions if not treated early may lead to permanent scarring or disfigurement.

An image of the lesion will help me be more specific. If it is possible please do send one across to me through a direct consultation available at HCM.
