Suggest Treatment For Swollen Ankles And Foot Pain

Just wondering what may be the cause of my swollen ankles and foot pain. I have sharp shooting pains in both feet accompanied by restless leg syndrome all day long. The pain is worse in the morning and when I have been sitting. I never add salt to my food, but had some chinese food a month ago and my feet and ankles swelled up so much that I couldn t wear any shoes. Since then, I have been watching my sodium and taking a diuretic. The swelling has lessened, but is not back to normal. I am a 53 year old female.

Hi,

Local causes should be sought after.
- Low hemoglobin is found to be treated
- Low serum proteins should be corrected if found on tests
Color Doppler of both the lower limbs to know whether there is any problem with venous system like dilated veins like varicose veins
- Deep vein thrombosis should be ruled out
- Restless leg syndrome usually occurs at bed time only hence the pain during the day may have an actual problem
- Stop diuretics if not helping as these can cause more electrolyte imbalance
- Further management as per the causes found
- Elevation of the lower limbs above heart level in laying down position should help you a lot
