Suggest Treatment For Swollen Fingers

Hi my dad been in the icu for a week and can only move his arms and head. His fingers are ballooned up, and I'd like to tell him how to reduce that swelling - can he put his arms in the air and move? will it help? He's on a ventilator hopefully temporary. He can't walk - as his nerve was compressed and we are hopeful about that. In the meantime he has developed breathing troubles. I'm trying to get something to work!
