Suggest Treatment For Swollen Gums And Raised Bumps On Tongue

Hi-
My (almost) 14 year old son has had a fever of 102.5 for the last three days--relieved by Motrin. He has had associated chills and general malaise. When he talks his throat sounds like it is swollen, but he says it is not sore. He vomited one time. His gums are all of a sudden very swollen and irritated and he has developed raised bumps on his tongue. We were at the ocean this past week on vacation and he did swim in the ocean and pools at the hotel. Please help.

Hi...
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC...

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain you son seems to be suffering from Viral Infection causing the above described symptoms and the condition is known as HERPATIC GINGIVOSTOMATITIS in which there is fever along with chills and malaise and there is formation of sores in mouth...
You should consult a physician and get him evaluated..
In case if the Viral Infection is diagnosed you should give him Tylenol or Motrin for pain relief..
Do cool compresses over gums for relief from Inflammation and reduction in swelling..
In case of pain in the sores on tongue a numbing gel like Oragel can be applied..
In severe cases antiviral Oral and topical Medication like Acyclovir therapy is given to the patient to reduce the duration of illness...
Give him cool and bland diet..
Give him sufficient rest..
Maintain a good Oral hygiene and brush his teeth twice a day using an ultra soft toothbrush..

Hope this information helps..

Hi dear ,

As per your query you have swollen gums , bumps on tongue and scratchy throat . The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as herpetic gingivostomatitis . It can occur due to herpes simplex virus type 1 , coxsackie virus or poor oral hygiene . I would suggest you to consult oral pathologist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order test like swab culture test to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out condition like oral allergy syndrome . Doctor may prescribe anti viral drug like acyclovir . For now Rinse your mouth with a medicated mouthwash containing hydrogen peroxide or xylocaine and avoiding very spicy, salty, or sour foods. Tke ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
