Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Degenerative Disc Disease In An Elderly Person

Thank you. My 82 year old mother has DDD, degenerative Disk Disease. She is becoming weak but still can walk, shower by herself and do laundry. However, what kind of medical consequences may occur as she ages? She has micro fissures in her lower back. I need to know what may occur and have some kind of practical plan in place. If this were your mother, what would you do? Get a back brace or medical girdle or arrange micro surgery for the disk problems? Or prepare to have a PSW?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is an age-related degenerative change and drugs like bisphosphonates will be helpful.

Surgery is not a good choice at this age. Most important thing is that you should prevent trivial falls and trauma as it can lead to fractures. Braces can also be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
