Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism

I m being treated for hypothyroidism possible hashimotos. My TSH is 4.55 and my Free T3 is low. I feel exhausted all the time and at certain times in the day its like I run out of gas. My hair is brittle and breaks off everytime I brush it or even run my fingers thru it. My husband has to clean out our drains and also the vaccum cleaner real often. My feet and hand feel like they have been frost bitten. They get so cold and sting and tingle bad. I stay constipated when my number is that high too. I ve had carpal tunnel surgery on both of my hands....I feel it was caused by the thyroid problem because I didn t do a repetitive job so I feel it s nerve damage from the coldness in my hands. Feet and legs tingle and hurt as well. I have a foggy brain and can t remember things very well. I ache all over but was recently diagnosed with RA and Lupus as well. I ve been seeing a Rhumetologist for over a year and even though I ve tested positive for the RA factor.....he s not convenced that I do have RA....He said that I could have it and I could have lupus but I don t show any significate damage in my feet and hands. My neck, shoulders, wrists, hands, lower back, hips, knees and my lower legs and feet hurt me really bad. I take plaquenil and it does seem to help some but back to the thyroid....I m 5 9 and I weigh 216 pounds so I m obese. Can t seem to lose any weight and I just feel awful....do u have any suggestions for my health to get better.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Hypothyroidism is basically lack of thyroid hormones in the body. It depends upon the severity of hypothyroidism, amongst other factors, whether a patient with hypothyroidism is to be treated or not. However, whenever a decision is made to treat hypothyroidism, levothyroxine supplementation is usually a part of the treatment plan.

The above prescription does not seem to have that. So I suggest you see an Endocrinologist and have him/her review your case history and reports in detail, and then decide upon the treatment plan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
