Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Peritonsillar Abscess

My son was diagnosed with quinsy when he was about 5yrs and again about 8 years old. Now an adult he was recently hospitalised as he could not swallow. The hospital drs administered IV antibiotics and steroid injections and conducted endoscospy. Whilst he has been discharged with oral antibiotics and cortisone they were unable to say what the problem was. He has been referred to a ENT specialist in two weeks. Is it possible he could have had quinsy again?

Hello,

Usually in adults, tonsillar abscess is associated with other symptoms of upper respiratory tract like cough, fever with chills, cold, sneezing, severe malaise, and difficulty in swallowing. As he was given IV antibiotics and steroids, infection or tonsillar abscess must have gone.

Other investigations that may help are:
1) Modified barium swallow
2) Fiberoptic laryngoscopy
3) Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing
You can consult a gastroenterologist and discuss the above methods.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
