i have cuts/tears in the base of my toes. They come and go. They heal with application of polysporin but they move from one toe to the other. I have been having this off and on for about 2 years now. what is the cause and what is the treatment. Thank you.

Hi,

Probably this is a form of acro-dermatitis, the cause of which is not well understood.

This is a chronic disease with intermittent exacerbations. Treatment during exacerbation (suggested by acute pain and occasionally oozing) includes warm saline soaks, emollients and antibiotic creams like fusidic acid or mupirocin.

After exacerbations, I used to advise continuous use of emollients and low potency steroid creams like desonide / fluticasone. Kindly discuss with a dermatologist, as confirmation of diagnosis needs a direct inspection or at least a good picture.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
