hello doctor My query is regarding thallassemia, My nephew is 2.8 years old and he is affected by Compound heterozyguos . We got to know from his DNA report. However he never needed blood transfusion. He is very active and growing well. but recently 2 months ago he was affected by viral fever that time his haemoglobin reache dto 5.1 but all these three years his haemoglobin is above 7.tested this month after 2 months of the transfusion his haemoglobin is 7.6g now. But we are really worried and not believing the reports. Doctors said her mother is silent carrier though it didn t show up in her reports and his father is having minor beta thallessemia
Thalassemia may worsen in acute infections like viral fever and that might provoke haemoglobin fall. As he is heterozygous he will live normally and blood transfusions rarely required.
You can opt for close monitoring with monthly haemoglobin checkup.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
