Hi,

White matter disease is degeneration of nerve fibers which connect the nerve cells in the brain and in the spinal cord, thus affecting the transmission of signals in the brain and spinal cord. It can result various symptom- disorder in the body, depending on the area of brain involved. It can affect a person's mood, focus, muscle strength, vision and balance.

It is generally a progressing disease, the rate of progression will depend on age, accompanying body disorders etc. Its main reason is considered presence of silent strokes in the brain and hence reasons for any cardio-vascular deficiency should be investigated & treatment done accordingly.

Aging is the main cause of the disease. The disease has no known treatment, however its progression may be minimized by treating any accompanying illness, healthy diet and regular exercise. Physiotherapy may be helpful in certain cases, particularly in problem of balancing and difficulty in walking etc., supplements of folic acid, vitamin D and methylcobalamin may be beneficial in some cases particularly for reducing the progression of symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
