Suggest Treatment For Tiredness Despite Taking Synthroid

My niece started with restless leg syndrome. She started on a new medication a few months ago. Then her doctor started her on synthoid after tests showed an interactive thyroid. Now she is always tired and is not able to walk as she has done in the past.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Synthroid is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Tiredness can be a symptom of hypothyroidism. In these circumstances i suggest to do a TSH test to see if your niece need to adjust the doses of Synthroid. If she take less medication for her low thyroid ,she will have hypothyroidism and fill be always tired. The TSH test will clarifies this situation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
