My father has been chewing pan parag for last 25 years or so. There's not a single moment he is not chewing it. Infact he sleeps with it in his mouth. I have tried to reason with him but with no effect. He doesn't want to quit and I am going nuts seeing him. Is there anything I can do that will help him. some medicines or anything. And please remember he doesnt like to replace it with anything.
Tobacco addiction is common problem. Most of pan masalas don't contain tobacco but they consists of many other activating substances. You have mentioned that he doesn't want to replace anything. First thing to start treatment is motivation to quit. I would advise you to request him to visit a psychiatrist for quitting the addiction. Once he becomes aware of cons and pros of addiction and treatment then we can make him motivated to take medicines.
Many drugs like Bupropion, Buspiron can be used in his case. These drugs will relieve anxiety (withdrawal anxiety) that will develop after stopping pan-parag. Nicotine patches don't have much role. Sugar free chewing gums will help in providing symptomatic relief for his local symptoms. Consult a Psychiatrist for proper treatment.
Thanks
