Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have Trigeminal Neuralgia, I have been on Opiods for 6 yrs. Received two glycerla shots, they only help for a couple of months... Oral surgeon said the only option left, Surgery. I am unemployed, uninsured, and tired of taking Opiods.....any Advise.....
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..
As per your complain Trigeminal Neuralgia is a nerve disorder that occurs due to either compression or injury to the branches of trigeminal nerve leading to electric shock like pain.. Glycerol injection can help in relieving the frequency of symptoms but most commonly there is relapse of the symptoms.. As you are taking opioids to relieve pain it should be stopped as long term intake can lead to addiction.. You can consult a Neurophysician and can get evaluated and he can advise you medications like Carbamazipine that is an anticonvulsant and it can help as it is the drug of choice for treating Neurotic pain caused by Trigeminal Neuralgia.. Other drugs that are also helpful are Gabapantin, Baclofen etc.. In case if the symptoms still does not improve then surgery is the only option left..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora..
