Suggest Treatment For Type 2 Diabetes

Hi

I am 53 years old woman diagnosed with Diabetes type II (fasting blood sugar, 14-18 mmol). I started with Gliclazide 40 mg twice a day, three day ago. I measured fasting bllod sugar at home. The fasting bood sugar was 15.4, 14.8 and 13.0. My question; 1-is this way this medication workinig and for how long I need to stay at this dose? 2-Do I need to increase the dose to 160 mg. If the fasting boold sugar remain high, what I would do?

Hello there,
From the description it appears that Gliclazide 40mg twice a day is gradually reducing your sugars (if the numbers you have mentioned is in any particular order of checking). So to answer your first question, the medicine is working. However each medicine affects different people differently. I am wondering was there a particular reason why you were not given Metfromin cause this drug helps in bringing down fasting sugars better. Do not increase or decrease doses on your own. Discuss this with your prescribing physician and your doctor will help you to begin Metformin if fasting sugars continue to be high after proper evaluation of kidney and liver functions. You may need to be on this dose for some time now and probably adding Metformin will be the right way to go.Till then reduce carbohydrate and sweet content of your food. Try to include lots of vegetables and salads in your meals. Go for regular exercise, at least 45 min per day for 5 days a week (if your heart condition allows). This will further reduce your blood sugars.
Hope this helps.
Take care
