Suggest Treatment For Upper Abdominal Pain

On the page about upper right abdominal pain, it says that constipation can indicate possible cancer, among other things. What types of cancer could that be? My husband, an 80 year old white male who is in very good health except for the pains of aging, is complaining of upper right side abdominal pain of 8-9 (of 10) which was relieved to 4-5 after lying flat on his back on a floor for half an hour. He has a history of very high PSA (28+) with a very enlarged prostate gland, which was reduced several years ago by laser surgery. Also, a genetically high cholesterol which has been treated with 2 different drugs, with absolutely no change. There is also a long family history of prostate cancer. He is uncircumcised, and has also recently complained of not being able to pull back the foreskin of his penis without great pain. (if this is too much info, I apologize, but it s all in the same area and I know a doctor must have a full history to reach an accurate diagnosis.) Thank you very much for being there. I ll be waiting to hear from you. Bea Childs

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Upper right abdominal pain is generally due to pathology of liver and gall bladder. A scan of abdomen is indicated to rule out/confirm any pathology of liver, gall bladder or pancreas. Constipation is not a sign of cancer of these organs. Cancer of colon may have symptoms of constipation, but in that case, the pain should not be only localized in right upper abdomen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
