Suggest Treatment For Upper Quadrant Pain And Bloating After Removal Of Gallbladder

Had gallbladder out over a year ago & still having problems. Symptoms are: upper right quadrant pain, bloating, excessive gas, intense pressure on right rib, glassy eyes, itchy face. This pain mostly occurs after eating, but sometimes after only drinking. Have had blood tests which are normal, MRCP (normal) & currently awaiting ERCP to be scheduled in the near future. Can this be caused by a small stone or sludge?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I can understand the trouble you are facing. All your symptoms except pain, are typical of post-cholecystectomy syndrome i.e. symptoms often seen after removal of gall bladder. These are expected & only symptomatic treatment is to be started. Pain can be due to stone in common bile duct (CBD) but you will be jaundiced as well which is not your case & MRCP is also normal. Stone is seen as filling defect in CBD on MRCP & is also seen on CT scan of abdomen. I would have done a CT scan of abdomen first instead of ERCP, so as to rule out any other pathology.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
