Suggest Treatment For Urinary Tract Infection In A Child

4 year old girl says her pp itches on the inside and has been treated for urinary track infection several times in the last year. Ultrasound came back negative for bigger problem. Not sure what to do. She hates cranberry juice even if we try to mask it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The child needs to be treated with antibiotics according to the urine culture to be able to get effective treatment. I would advise to have urine culture and choose the antibiotics according to the results of the urine culture. Also, if the infections just repeat even though there is nothing abnormal identified, probably a small daily dose of prophylactic antibiotics can be considered. She needs to drink plenty of water to help with the control of the infections.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
