Suggest Treatment For Urticaria And Allergic Rhinitis

Hi, I was diagnosed idiopathic urticaria and allergic rhinitis 4 years back. (I had raised wheels/hives and itchy nose, runny, sneezing). I was put on a daily dose L-montus 10 mg. it cured the condition but since then I haven t been able to stop the drug. Stopping the medication even for 48 hours, makes me sneeze, gives me uncontrollable itching all over body and chest wheezing. I am thus on L-montus since 4 years. Since I am a female, I am concerned about its use in pregnancy which may be planned in the future. Please advice. (Allergic testing showed allergy only to dust mites/pollen. No other food allergy)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Instead of abruptly stopping the drug, tapering of the drug can be done to reduce discomfort. Exposure to montelukast during pregnancy does not appear to increase the risk of major malformations above the 1% to 3% baseline in the general population.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General and Family Physician
