Suggest Treatment For Villonodular Synovitis On Knee

Dear Dr,
My husband, 29, is diagonised with pigmented villonodular synovitis on his right knee. He has this swelling for about 5-6 years.
He got acute pain last week and was not able to stretch his knee for hours. Only after applying heat and having pain killer he was relieved from pain. No medicine was recommended to him other than a pain killer when this was found out. Now when we consulted another dr. he asked us to do arthroscopic surgery fro removal of synovial tissue. and also told that there are chances of recurrence of swelling. he added that even open surgery for removal of synovial tissue will cause recurrence of swelling.
Dr. , i need to know is there any other solution for this? how can the recurrence be delayed?
