Suggest Treatment For Vision Loss After A Head Injury

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here... hi doctor... I, daughter of Mr. Jagbir Singh Hooda, desperately want to know about a treatment for my father. He met with an accident in 1980 and had severe head injury due to which he lost the vision of his right eye and there was a blood clot in his optic nerves. So, he can see very very very little from left eye. For eg. He can tell the direction of light in dark, he can save himself from an obstacle like table, he can see person coming sometimes. His height is 5.10 , weight is 95 kgs and age is 53 years. He was primarily treated in the Rohtak medical which was technologically backward then. After that he also approached AIIMS but there was no possible treatment at that time. In absolute disappointment, his eye treatment was abandoned in 1991 as the doctors gave up. Since the technology has advanced now, I would like to seek advice from you regarding the same.

Hi,

I am sorry for your father. There seems to be Optic nerve degeneration that had taken place for all these years. The optic nerve cannot be replaced. Though the tech had improved but in such case if the incident is so fresh the clot can be dislodged or dissolved. Except that there is no major break through that took place in terms of regenerating the nerve. If your father had already approached the apex institute RPOP in AIIMS they should have guided your father if such tech advancements exist. I think at this time he just have to make sure the vision is preserved in terms of keep blodo pressure, sugar and cholesterol under control.
