Suggest Treatment For Weight Gain While On Olanzapine
Hi! I just gained 12 kg in a month taking olanzapine. I do not wish to stop taking it, because since I was 13 years old up until 29, most of my life I felt constantly awful, and all of the sudden, with this drug, I feel not disgusting! This is so alien to me. I take this drug (5 mg ) before bed for Bipolar. Also I am on lithium and lamotrigine. I think lithium does not do anything. I never can focus, I am dysfunctional in life, I still feel hopeless. Always. What to d not to gain another 20 kg? I can not stop eating. Would a doctor prescribe me stimulants for focus so they contradict huge appetite effects?
A lot of medications can, unfortunately, cause weight gain but different means.
Weight gain can occur by:
(1) Increase in appetite
(2) Decrease energy level and therefore activity
(3) Decreased fullness
(4) Affecting metabolism
If there is an increase in appetite, use foods that would not be associated with significant weight gain eg cucumber or certain other fruits, no-calorie drinks, kale, spinach, etc. These foods will fill you without adding weight.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
