Suggest Treatment For White Spot On Enlarged Tonsils

I felt something in back of my throat or tongue, looked with a light and found a white spot on my left enlarged tonsil. I took a sharp object and a q-tip and started to remove it. It worked, but there s a small hole there and I m worried. It doesn t hurt, but there seems to be more white stuff in there. Should I gargle with apple cider vinegar or something, or do you recommend something else?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the white spot on enlarged tonsil indicate severe tonsillitis with bacterial infection as staph aureus or streptococci most likely. The therapy approach is multi disciplinary action to be taken as:
- Gargles with salted lukewarm water and peppermint oil
- Do not try to scratch or remove the white portion of lump (which may bleed profusely and convert this into dial emergency)
- Take a culture swab from the pharyx with pathologist to get sensitivity pattern of needed antibiotics
- Prescription of specific antibiotics as penicillin, cephalosporin or others as per his need.
- Supportive anti inflammatory as nimesulide
- Proteolytic enzymes as serratiopeptidase or else
- Control of blood sugar
- Dietary measures to avoid all spices, non veg, jink foods
- Avoid smoking (active or passive) and alcohol if consuming

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
