Suggest Ways To Decrease Menstrual Bleeding

Hi, I go on holiday on the 10th August and my period was due on the 12th and I didn t want to be on my period while one holiday, so I went to the doctors yesterday (6th) and they gave me norethisterone tablets to delay my period, I was planning to start taking them on the 8th as the doctor told me you need to take them 3-4 days before your period is due, but I woke up this morning and my period had already started. My periods have recently been 7 days long which will mean I will be on my period on my holiday. Is there anything I can do about this? Am I able to still take the norethisterone tablets I was given to stop my period? Please help, thankyou.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

As your doctor has mentioned,it is essential to take norethisterone atleast 3 to 4 days before expected day of periods.Only by taking the drug ahead of bleed,it can be stopped.

Bleeding occurs due to withdrawal of hormones and shedding of uterine endometrium.Once the bleeding has started,it is not possible to stop the flow with drugs.Heavy blood flow with clots may be reduced with antifibrinolytic drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
