Suggest Ways To Manage Depression

I m feeling very depressed, but don t know how to approach getting care. Should I go to my primary care physician first or go directly to a psychologist? I m 74 and am in reasonably good health except for the depressed feelings over a traumatic event that happened thirty-four years ago. My e-mail address is: YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You should consult your GP without much delay, do not let your symptoms get worse. Some signs of depression can be managed with symptomatic treatment by medications, lifestyle changes & psycho/physiotherapy.

Try to stay active, avoid sedentary life. Take adequate sleep, avoid negative people and negative thoughts. Avoid stress, anxiety & irritability.

You can take the help of a Psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Therapies like CBT, Cognitive behavior therapy, IPT, Interpersonal therapy effectively control depression.

Take nutritious food, read books, listen to music, make new friends, travel.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
